PhD Title: The Entrepreneur Strategist in Small to Medium Enterprises.
The private section-driven economies of the highly industrialised G7 countries of the UK, the US, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Canada, proved the effective role of the private sector in the advancement of a country's gross domestic product (GDP). Private sector-driven initiatives have also proven to have rapidly industrialised once-struggling economies such as the four Asian Tiger economies - Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. In this 21st century, China, Russia and India are next in line and have strategically set up government-backed initiatives, supporting small to medium enterprises. These countries follow a pattern of economic development driven by the private sector. According to George S. Clason, in his book 'The Richest Man in Babylon', the riches of the ancient Babylon were amassed as a result of its private sector initiatives. Historic texts show that prior to the 19th century, cottage industries, mostly the Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) controlled the economy of Europe. The Industrial Revolution in Europe changed the status quo and introduced mass production.
This research used the storytelling approach together with conventional qualitative research methods to investigate 'the entrepreneur strategist in the small to medium enterprises in Nigeria'.
SMEs are the engine block of an economy, including a yet developing economy such as Nigeria. As a result, the development of SME initiatives serves as a sine qua non for job creation, a solid entrepreneurial base, encouragement to use local raw materials, and the opportunity to employ local expertise and technologies. This research found that from the SME development potentials identified in Nigeria, and the sources of information and support identified, the entrepreneurial strategists are in strong positions to exploit the SME opportunities and drive the economy, using what this research identifies as the entrepreneur strategist attributes. The SME business environment in Nigeria is complex and dynamic, with untapped potential. The job of the entrepreneur strategist is also to manage change, threats, and opportunities through effective strategic leadership. Strategic thinking would lead to strategic decisions, strategic decisions lead to strategic actions, and strategic actions lead to sustainable superior performances both in the market competition and in the changing environment.
