PhD Title: The Role of Government Policies in Shaping Urban Development and the Implications of these Policies for Urban Residents.
Urbanisation is the process of population shift from rural to urban areas, which leads to an increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas. The concept of urbanisation, creates a sense of community amongst people and a lifestyle that they identify with. Urban living is the lifestyle associated with living in a city, which includes access to public transportation, cultural events, and other amenities. Data was collected from city administration offices and interviews conducted, involving city administrators and residents from across different city districts. It was found that urban decay, which is the process by which a previously functioning city or part of a city falls into disrepair and neglect, is a challenge that city administrations face. It also found that slum settlements are a key feature of every city. Slums are areas of a city characterised by poor living conditions and inadequate infrastructure. Therefore city administrators continue to deal with issues relating to slum living and slum activities. Often than none, slum activities pose serious challenges to city policy implementation and in the management of the affluent neighbourhoods and business districts. Business districts are areas of a city where commercial activity is concentrated, while affluent neighbourhoods are areas where wealthy people live. The research concludes that government policies can have significant implications for urbanisation, urban living, urban decay, slums, business districts, and affluent neighbourhoods. It is recommended that further research should explore these issues in depth and provide insights into how government policy can be used to address them in distinctive contexts.
